New Milton – Dementia Friendly Town

We have five very active Allotment groups throughout the town, covering more than 105 plots spread over 5 sites across New Milton. Allotments were introduced into the Parish of New Milton by the Lymington Borough Council during World War Two, and subsequently became the responsibility of the present Council with the demise of the Borough Council and the introduction of the New Forest District Council during 1979.

Currently, New Milton Town Council offers a mixture of full, half and more recently quarter – sized plots located at 5 individual sites within the Parish, namely Upper, Middle and Lower Ashley, Becton Lane and Lymington Road. New Milton has recently become a ‘dementia friendly’ town and we are trying to help those living with Dementia to enjoy a fuller social life outdoors doing something therapeutic. With that in mind, and thanks to external funding, we were able to install three raised beds for that particular purpose.

The aim of this community project is to create a space where those with dementia can benefit from meaningful and therapeutic activity while enjoying fresh air, physical activity and socialising. In doing this, the Town Council hope to achieve the following:

1.  Shape the community around the views of people with dementia.

2.  Empower those with dementia, recognising their contribution to the community.

3.  Encourage dementia friendliness throughout the whole local community.

4.  Help people with dementia to engage in community life.

5.  Challenge stigma and build awareness of people living with dementia.
