About us

The Town Council is elected by the residents of the Town and the surrounding area and is the level of local government most directly accessible to the public.  It is elected every 4 years (the next local elections for the Town are in May 2011) and is responsible for the provision of a number of services and facilities and the maintenance of public open spaces in and around the Town.

While the Town itself is over a 100 years old the Town Council has only been in existence since 1979, New Milton having previously been part of the Borough of Lymington.

The Town currently has 18 Councillors representing 5 wards - Milton, Becton, Barton and Fernhill, each with four Councillors and Bashley, with two.

The Town Council acts as Charity Trustee under the direction of the Charity Commission with regard to the New Milton Recreation Ground, which in addition to its formal facilities, is also utilised by members of the public for various forms of informal recreation.  The `Rec' as it is more commonly known, is situated close to New Milton town centre with access from Old Milton Road, Whitefield Road and Station Road (through a pedestrian link).

Maintenance of public open spaces is another of the Council's responsibilities, and this includes the much praised flower beds and containers in the town centre, together with flower and shrub beds at a number of other locations within the town.  The principal open spaces under the Council's control are: Barton Common and the adjacent Long Meadow; Ballard Lake and its surrounds together with the adjoining area at Brook Avenue just north of the town centre and the Recreation Ground mentioned previously.

The Town Council is also consulted by the District and County Councils about many topics including the provision of street lighting, footpaths and highway improvements.
